• Development of furniture design in the Asian region, in China and Japan
• Rococo and its manifestations in the furniture design of different countries; most notable Rococo craftsmen and ebonists; technologies and characteristics
• Development of the European Classical era; famous English, German and French craftsmen and their designs
• Development of furniture styles in Russia
• Post-French Revolution furniture design in different European countries
• The influence of the growing middle class on the development of Biedermeier style and its manifestations in furniture design
• Historicism at the end of the 19th century
• Russian furniture design and its influence on the Baltic region.
• The development of art nouveau and its diffusion; characteristics and manifestations in furniture design
• The designs of the Viennese School during the interwar period
• Art Deco style in furniture design
Study outcome
Upon completion of the course, students will:
• be familiar with the characteristics of interior and furniture design styles of the most important European regions in the 18th century;
• be able to interrelate Eastern and European furniture types and decors;
• be familiar with the development and designs of the most notable furniture designers of different European countries;
• have an overview of the influence of industrial revolution on the culture and furniture design of the 19th century;
• be familiar with the development of design as a new cultural phenomenon and its forms of manifestation at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century;
• comprehend the influence of WWI on the development of interior and furniture design;
• comprehend the development of furniture design in the Republic of Estonia and the European countries after WWII.
