• The impact of the ornamentics from previous cultures on the decorative art in the 18th to 20th centuries.
• Decorative art and the principles of interior design during the Gothic and Renaissance period.
• Baroque and Rococo in decorative art and interior.
• Oriental impact on the European decorative art in the 16th to 19th centuries.
• Classicist interiors with the antique influences, the Empire style and Biedermeier.
• Historicist interiors.
• The relations between decorative art and industrial production. Arts and Crafts movement.
• Art Nouveau and Art deco in the decorative art and interior. Estonian national romanticism.
• Modernism, functionalism and traditionalism in interior design. Bauhaus, Scandinavian countries.
• Postmodern interiors.
• Principles of contemporary interior design.
Study outcome
Upon completion of the course, students will:
• have the basic knowledge of different fields of decorative art, the development and transformation of form and ornaments in the history of style;
• be familiar with the main principles of interior design and spatial planning, since the Middle Age till the middle of the 20th century;
• the main historical styles and interior design practices of different eras, and be able to make difference between them by their characteristics of form;
• be familiar with the main reasons and cultural background for the change of styles;
• be able to describe and analyse different periods of styles, by using professional terminology.
