• the inception of cinema; animated views; early motion pictures; silent film period;
• the rise of Hollywood and its consequences;
• global spread of cinema;
• different national schools of thought in cinema
• sound film 1930-1960
• Modernist cinema
• documentary practice, its evolution and possibilities, observational and involved documentary;
• film genres, their formation and evolution;
• contemporary cinema: the most recent developments;
• digital filmmaking, "little cinema" , docu- and mocumentaries in contemporary cinema. |

| Aim |
| To provide an overview of the history of cinema and contextualize this with the evolution of other arts, including photography. This is an introductory course. |

| Study outcome |
On successful completion of this course the students should be able to:
• distinguish the historical periods of cinema;
• know the general aims and aesthetic principles of cinema during different periods;
• analyze the layers of directing, cinematography and acting in a movie;
• place their own art in the context of cinema history;
• know the important historical developments in local cinema;
• have a general overview of different genres in cinema (silent film, comedy, western, horror, film noir) |
