General description
• the essence of staging: constructing, arranging and directing scenes;
• physical space and image space; staging and montage;
• the origin of the elements of staged photography: theatre, painting, cinema; the specifics of photographic staging;
• staging and documentary practise; documentary as a form of staging;
• the genres of photographic staging: the self and staging, media reflexivity, miniature stages, etc;
• the natural vs artificial duality: its history and contemporary state;
• the borders of photographic staging: from surrealism to documentary drama;
• the application of photographic staging: fashion photography, the nude, advertisement and independent art;
• the character of staged portraiture and group photography: from psychological investigations to documentary and media reflexive role-play;
• working with models; getting the models to open up, "tuning" the models for the staging;
• creating the space and the psychological atmosphere for staged photography;
• the origin of staged photography elements involving people: theatre, painting, cinema; the specific character of staging in portrait and group photography;
• genres of photographic staging: staging the self;
• the natural, the artificial and staged naturality;
Study outcome
On successful completion of this course the students should be able to:

• possess diverse knowledge of the use of staging in historic and contemporary context;
• know the many applications of staged photography;
• work in a studio; use props and accessories;
• know the sign systems of theatre-, stage- and film art: facial expressions, the semantics of gesticulation, the significatory potential of clothing, accessories and cosmetics;
• work with amateur and professional models;
• create effective scenes and combine the scene elements into effective entities;
• have diverse knowledge of the uses of staging in portrait and group photography;
• know about the various uses of staged portraiture;
