General description
Theoretical subjects
• Binding constructions and their historical development in making the bindings.
• Overview about different sewing techniques of textblocks.
• Overview about different possibilities of making headbands.
Practical works
• Making textblocks by using different sewing techniques:
- archival sewing,
- link stitch,
- different possibilities of sewing on band,
- different possibilities of sewing on cord,
- sewing over double raised cord
• Making headbands for text blocks while taking the historical styles into consideration.
Aim
The objective is to provide the theoretical knowledge about the most important binding constructions (sewing styles, headbands) since their historical development, and practical skills to make different binding constructions.
Study outcome
Upon completion of the course, students will:
• be familiar with the historical development of binding constructions;
• identify the bindings according to their constructional features;
• be able to make textblocks by using different sewing techniques;
• be able to make different headbands while taking the historical style of the binding into consideration.
