General description
Theoretical subjects
• Constructional elements of binding, important binding materials, main damages of bindings.
• Contemporary binding, its specificity and problems. Contemporary binding materials.
• The specifics of conserving leather bindings.
• The principles of conserving/restoring bindings, tools and materials.
• Preservation of bindings (environment, instruments and materials for preservation).
Practical works
• Simple techniques of repairing a binding (repairing a back or cover corners, repairing/reinforcing a textblock).
• Techniques of repairing contemporary bindings (for example, adhesive binding).
• Conservation of half leather and leather bindings.
Aim
The objective is to provide basic the theoretical and practical knowledge about the conservation/restoration of bindings.
Study outcome
Upon completion of the course, students will:
• be familiar with the most important constructional specifics, binding materials, their features and damages;
• be familiar with the terminology related to the restoration of bindings;
• be familiar with the principles of conservation/restoration, the related materials and work instruments;
• be familiar with the simple techniques of repairing the bindings;
• have the knowledge about the principles of preserving bindings.
