| General description |
• Technology. Different sewing techniques of a non-adhesive binding.
• Longstitch binding (seam through slits cut into the back, seam through the back plate).
• Chain stitch binding, (classic seam, seam with diagonals and circles).
• Binding sewn on slip leather thongs.
• Hinge binding.
• Binding design. Technology of a non-adhesive binding will be the basis for the design.
• Analysis of the principles of a binding design.
• Finding solutions to the problems related to rhythm and form based on the specifics of materials.
• Creative assignment.
• Practical work. Binding for the chosen book:
- Analysis of binding materials and work techniques;
- Acquiring the work techniques of a bookbinding;
- Applying leather decoration techniques. |

| Study outcome |
Upon completion of the course, students will:
• generate creative ideas and be familiar with the principles of creating a binding design;
• be able to create a complete binding design that reflects the subject of a book, while understanding the expressiveness and interaction of materials;
• have the basic knowledge about the different historical sewing techniques of a non-adhesive binding;
• be able to solve the problems related to materials, binding technique and finishing;
• be capable of developing a technical solution suitable for the conceptual design and carry it out in practice.
