| General description |
Theoretical part
• Constructional elements and materials of a binding. The main damages of bindings.
• Contemporary binding, its specificity and problems. Contemporary binding materials.
• The principles of conservation/restoration of bindings. Working tools and materials.
• The principles of the preservation of bindings.
Practical part
• Simple techniques of repairing a binding (repairing a back or corners, repairing/reinforcing a text block).
• Techniques of repairing contemporary bindings.
• Making simple preservation covers for bindings. |

| Aim |
| The objective is to introduce the students the terminology, tools and materials related to the conservation/restoration of bindings. Simple binding repairing techniques and important preservation principles. |

| Study outcome |
Upon completion of the course, students will:
• be familiar with the bindings' constructions, materials, their features and damages;
• be familiar with modern binding materials and specifics of binding technology.
• be familiar with the principles of conservation/restoration of bindings.
• be familiar with the simple techniques of repairing the bindings;
