Aim

1. Provide high-quality professional higher education in the subject area of furniture along with opportunities for specialisation in design or restoration.
2. Promote the acquisition of varied professional knowledge and skills.
3. Educate the next generation of specialists and/or creative artists who boast independent thinking and decision-making ability and adaptability.
4. Prepare students for moving into post-graduate studies as well as for life-long learning and continuous self-development in other ways.

Study options

General module and speciality module: compulsory
Module of elective and optional subjects: it is compulsory to select between 3 elective units of general subjects (see modules of the curriculum); optional subjects can be selected from among the optional subjects offered by TAC (about 10 courses each term) and by other higher education institutions.
Specialisations: Before making the choice, the students are given a comprehensive introduction to both areas of specialisation as part of the general module, worth 6 ECTS. By the end of the 2nd year, a student must choose either of the minor specialities of design and conservation/restoration.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students will:
- understand the basic principles, mechanisms and social relevance of furniture design and restoration;
- have an overview of the history of furniture design, know the trends in modern furniture design;
- be able to follow and analyse subject-related information and draw conclusions;
- be creatively experimental, generate fresh ideas and carry them out;
- be capable of applying appropriate work methods, materials, technologies and tools in view of the task;
- be able to integrate the acquired knowledge and skills with regard to professional objectives;
- demonstrate initiative and the ability to plan and organize and a sense of responsibility both for individual and team work;
- be guided in their activity by law, professional ethics and normative documents and ecological concerns;
- be willing to actively participate in the civil society, demonstrate tolerance towards diversity of cultures, attitudes and values;
- have command of oral and written communication skills both in Estonian and English with regard to their profession;
- be able to operate as furniture designer or conservator/restorer according to the specialisation;
- be capable of creative and continuous learning both in theory and practice or further study at post- graduate level.
