Subject 'The Basics of Material Identification'Name in Estonian: Materjalide identifitseerimise alused
General descriptionMaterials and their composition based on the aspects of their identification and damage description. The fundamentals of the methods for assessing, describing, observing and analysing the object’s condition. Basic methods of analysis and research. The macro- and microscopic analysis of materials.
AimTo provide the basic knowledge of material composition and structure, methods and devices to study the materials
Form descriptionTopics
Introduction to the material identification Using scientific methods in conservation The description of the main methods. The fundamentals of microscopy. Describing damages by using a stereomicroscope. Identifying materials by using optical microscope. Introduction to the possibilities of polarised light microscopy. The method of making cross-sections. Identifying materials by using chemical tests Introduction to the different instrumental methods. Study outcomeUpon completion, students will:
have the theoretical knowledge of the criteria of the object condition assessment and the selection principles of conservation methods; be familiar with the research methods of physical and chemical processes; be able to select suitable research methods which are the basis for preparing a conservation plan; be able to use macro- and microscopic observation in the research of objects with different radiation levels; be able to make cross-sections and analyse them; be able to perform chemical tests for identifying materials; be able to use microscopic observation in identifying biological damage.
