General description

• Leather and its qualities. The importance and meaning of leather through history.
• Historical leather processing techniques.
• Main leather applications.
• Archaeological leather. Important findings of archaeological leather. The importance of archaeological findings on the contemporary leather art.
• Ethnographic leather. The importance of ethnographic leather on the contemporary leather art;
• Older leather work and its masters in Estonia.

Aim

The objective is to provide students with the basic knowledge about leather, its historical processing techniques and applications. Within the course, an overview about the older period of the history of leather art in Estonia will be provided. In addition, the archaeological and ethnographic leather and their role in the context of the contemporary leather art will be introduced.

Study outcome

Upon completion of the course, students will:
• comprehend the importance of leather and its role in the people's everyday life through history;
• be familiar with the most important terminology related to leather and its processing;
• have an overview about the technologies of leather processing used in various periods of time;
• be able to analyse the specifics of different leather types and know the principles of identifying leathers;
• be familiar with the specifics of the archaeological leather and have an overview about the most important leather findings; be able to appreciate its importance on the contemporary leather art;
• be aware of the problems related to the ethnographic leather; comprehend its impact on the contemporary leather art;
• develop a discussion and/or express their thoughts in written based on their acquired knowledge.
