General description• Collector's book, rare binding and the related terminology.
• Specific shapes of the written records. Coptic, Ethiopian and Byzantine binding. • Medieval binding. • Islamic binding. • Renaissance binding. • Binding in the 17th and 18th centuries (Baroque, Rococo). • Binding in the end of the 18th century and in the 19th century (Classicism, the Empire style, Historicism, Art Nouveau). AimThe objective is to provide the basic knowledge about the most important developmental stages of the older period of the history of binding art.
Study outcomeUpon completion of the course, students will:
• have the knowledge about the methodology and terminology of the history of binding art; • have a complete overview about the most important stages of the older period of the history of binding art; • capable of analysing the styles and constructional specifics of the bindings from different eras; • be able to determine the style of the bindings or their belonging to a certain era based on their acquired knowledge; • be familiar with the most well-known masters of bookbinding and the collections of the most well-known rare bindings; • develop a discussion and/or express their thoughts in written based on their acquired knowledge.
