General description• Overview about different principles of a binding design.
• Classic binding design (decoration techniques of flat surfaces: intarsia, cliché, gilding, and veining). • Design based on book content (abstract or pictorial images, capturing the book's atmosphere, freely chosen decoration technique). • Lettering composition as the basis for a binding design (book's title or author's monogram in an original design and in the freely chosen decoration technique). • Practical work. Full leather binding and a case. - Applying the techniques of processing textblocks and backs characteristic to the French binding. - Decorating textblock edges, sewing headbands. - Tooling titles with a gold foil. - Applying leather decoration techniques based on the design. - Making a case. • Documenting a work process and presenting the works. AimThe objective is to combine the acquisition of a binding design and technology of classical binding within the practical work.
Study outcomeUpon completion of the course, students will:
• have the knowledge about different principles of a binding design and the skills to apply the knowledge in designing a unique binding; • analyse the fundamental suitability of the design elements and chosen literary art; • comprehend the principles of using a font in a binding design; • comprehend the technology and work techniques of a classical binding and be able to apply them in practice; • have the basic knowledge about the binding materials and decoration techniques and their application possibilities; • be able to present their works and justify their choices.
