General description

Theoretical part
• Paper and its composition. Physical-chemical qualities of paper.
• Paper degradation (paper acidity, its measuring possibility, neutralisation of the acid paper)
• Problem related to inks and dyes in the conservation/restoration of handwritten paper materials.
• The principles of the conservation/restoration handwritten materials.
• Preservation of handwritten paper materials.
.Practical part
• Assessing the condition of handwritten paper materials.
• Selecting a suitable conservation/restoration method.
• Selecting suitable tools and materials and preparing the work station.
• Carrying out practical conservation /restoration works.
• Preparing guidelines for documentation and preservation.

Study outcome

Upon completion of the course, students will:
• be familiar with different handwritten paper materials and their qualities;
• be familiar with the reasons behind the degradation of paper and know how to analyse them;
• select a suitable restoration method based on the character of the object, paper and damages;
• perform practical conservation/restoration works based on the chosen method;
• create a documentation for the completed works.
