General description

• the concept and the limits of the visual; visual culture and visual studies;
• mediated and non-mediated visuality;
• essentialist and functionalist visual culture theories;
• key features of visual semiotics
• “iconic grammar” and iconic regularities: from structuralism to post-structuralism;
• the importance of iconic communication in society;
• mediated visuality and the truth value of iconic information;

Study outcome

On successful completion of this course the students should be able to:
• know, systematically, the goal and specifics of visual culture studies;
• know their way around in the main concepts and methods used in visual rhetoric;
• know the function of different media in visual culture as a whole;
• know their way around in the idiosyncrasies of art communication in the context of visual culture;
• know the contextualization necessary in the theorization of visual culture;
• informedly choose between different methods of analysis;
• combine different methods of analysis and theorization;
