Subject 'History of Cinema'Name in Estonian: Kinematograafia ajalugu
General description• the inception of cinema; animated views; early motion pictures; silent film period;
• the rise of Hollywood and its consequences; • global spread of cinema; • different national schools of thought in cinema • sound film 1930-1960 • Modernist cinema • documentary practice, its evolution and possibilities, observational and involved documentary; • film genres, their formation and evolution; • contemporary cinema: the most recent developments; • digital filmmaking, "little cinema" , docu- and mocumentaries in contemporary cinema. AimTo provide an overview of the history of cinema and contextualize this with the evolution of other arts, including photography. This is an introductory course.
Study outcomeOn successful completion of this course the students should be able to:
• distinguish the historical periods of cinema; • know the general aims and aesthetic principles of cinema during different periods; • analyze the layers of directing, cinematography and acting in a movie; • place their own art in the context of cinema history; • know the important historical developments in local cinema; • have a general overview of different genres in cinema (silent film, comedy, western, horror, film noir) Is taught in following curricula2019: 2271 2018: 2271 2017: 2271 2016: 2271 2015: 2271 2014: 2271 2013: 2271
