• technical basics: learning to use InDesign software; • using imitation as a means to learn traditional layout principles; • basics of typography; • practical problem solving: space, composition, ease and practicality of use; • the principles of traditional layout structure; • reworking layout stereotypes to achieve stronger expressive effect; • layout and originality: perceiving the possibilities for personal expression in layout; • technical execution: choosing the correct tools and using these competently for creative work; the reasoning behind the choices; Study outcomeOn successful completion of this course the students should be able to:
• analyze common layout works; have a personal critical opinion on these; • analyze the structure of typical layouts and can imitate these with technical precision and optimal effort; • perceive the differences of various fonts and can use these for their goals; • can produce reader-friendly, print-economical and effective layouts; • critically analyze traditional and innovative layouts; • create original, contemporary layouts which are both informative and expressive; • execute their ideas adequately in virtual and physical form; • explain, justify, and defend the content and the technical choices of their work.
