General description

• introduction: what is installation?
• the history of installation: Gesamtkunstwerk, total art, etc;
• relations between objects and their spatial configurations;
• the technicality of installative art: mechanics, electronics, light and sound technology;
• achieving a coherent whole in installation art: elements and integrating elements;
• narrative dimension in installation art;
• interactive dimension in installation art;
• the characteristics of viewer participation in installation art and when looking at photographs;

Aim

To learn to articulate expression by configuring photographs and photographic arrays into spatial forms and constellations.

Study outcome

On successful completion of this course the students should be able to:

• have an overview of photo arrays that are expressively articulated in a space;
• know when there is need to amplify the expressive power of photo arrays in a space;
• assess the interrelation between photographs and other components in an installation;
• understand the semantics of installation;
• creatively surpass the purely decorative dimensions of installations;
• innovately configure photographs and other installation components.
