Aim

The objective is to explore the change of arts in the crossroads of science, painting, photography, design, cinema, video and electronic communication technologies; provide an overview of the history of the cinema and relate it with the evolution of other art formats. The objective is to introduce students to the history of letters, texts, books, prints and their layouts since the beginning of the civilisation until nowadays; show the logic and reasons behind the evolution of graphic design; why printed works look as they do; introduce the pioneers of graphic design and its most influential representatives.

Study outcome

Upon completion of the course, students will:
1. understand the utilization of technological and electronic instruments in the past and in visual arts;
2. know the subtypes of media arts;
3. know the significant artists and their works in new media;
4. sense media arts as a social influencing mechanism;
5. be able to distinguish the historic periods of cinematography;
6. understand the general objectives and aesthetic principles of cinematography during different periods;
7. be able to analyse the layers of meaning related to directing, cinematography and acting in the film;
8. be able to ground and contextualise their own products in the context of the film history;
9. know the main developmental stages in the local cinematography;
10. have an overview of different film genres (silent film, comedy, western, horror, film noir etc);
11. comprehend the preservation of letters, calligraphy and texts, and the history of books, printing, printing techniques and graphic design;
12. find the connection between print layouts and the corresponding historic background;
13. be able to write a history-related essay.
